Spectronics Launches New Transilluminator Line

Spectronics Corporation has developed a line of transilluminators for the life-sciences industry. The Spectroline Bi-O-Vision Series transilluminators feature two workstations that produce both 312nm ultraviolet and white light. The TD-1000R model offers fixed intensity while the TVD-1000R model provides users with variable intensity control of either ultraviolet or while light, according to the Westbury, N.Y.-based company. The units are adjustable from 100 percent to 50 percent, enabling life science researchers to choose the exact amount of ultraviolet or while light illumination needed to photo-document samples. The UV-B (312nm) intensity of the Bi-O-Vision can be adjusted without preset stops—its ranges go from 6,000 to 3,000 µW/cm² and the white light output can be regulated to fall between 1,000 and 2,000 foot-candles (93 to 186 lux). This flexibility in irradiance control ensures the longest sample preparation time, giving researchers a degree of protection against sample damage. The Bi-O-Vision has two adjacent workstations, each with a filter area of 8-by-8 inches (20-by-20 centimeters). The ultraviolet side is illuminated by five 8-watt UV-B tubes and delivers nanogram sensitivity for detecting ethidium bromide-stained DNA or RNA. The white light side has three 8-watt fluorescent tubes that allow researchers to look at Coomassie blue-stained protein gels, methylene blue-stained DNA gels and autoradiograms.
